Family Company – “The Struggle”
We have found like many family companies, that have grown rapidly, there is a constant struggle between controlling the growth through the appropriate corporate structures which are necessary to perform effectively as the organisation expands; and the desire to maintain a “family feel”, where individuals are valued and respected. In the early days, when the team was small it was easy to “put your arms around” the organisation and create an atmosphere where individuals felt part of the family.
Now as we approach 250 employees, the challenge is to break the organisation down into smaller units, where each manager, supervisor or team leader is charged with “putting his arms around his team”, with each team feeling valued and very much part of the bigger Markey Family.
Our ultimate challenge is for Individuals to think “This is a great place to come to work” and for the client\customer, to feel part of the extended family by experiencing a high quality of service provided by our teams who are passionate about being the best.
We the Markey Group are a team of people that share a common aim of wanting to constantly develop ourselves, our products, and our service; if you can help us by identifying areas for improvement we would welcome your suggestions. We look forward to hearing from you.

Paul Markey BA (Hons) ACA
Position: Group Managing Director
Date of Birth: 19th July 1960
Qualifications:
• BA (Hons) in Accounting & Finance
• Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants
Experience:
He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1985 after which time he transferred to South Africa, where he spent a further three years, in the profession.
In 1989 he decided that it was time to leave the profession and try putting the experience he had gained in to practice, by joining the family business. Having joined Tony in the company they set about expanding Markeys and adding other complimentary businesses to the Group.Paul is responsible for the general management and finances of the company, and the overall strategy and development of the group. |

Tony Markey MCIOB
Position: Managing Director
Date of Birth: 5th February 1964
Qualifications:
• City in Guilds – Carpentry & Joinery (Distinction)
• NVQ level 5 in Construction Management
• Member of the Chartered Institute of Building
Experience:
Upon joining Markey Builders, Tony began working in the joinery shop, whilst completing a City in Guilds in Carpentry & Joinery. His duties then increased to overseeing, manufacturing joinery, buying of materials and distribution of materials processes; at this time the company had 5 employees. Adding further to his managerial role, his duties increased to include estimating and tendering and developing client relationships.
Tony has been Contracts Director since 1996; during this time one of his proudest achievements has been delivering the profitable growth and diversification of the business whilst maintaining a very low turnover of staff. We have enjoyed a virtually nil turnover of staff over the last 4 years and currently have over 45 directly employed personnel.
He is now responsible for the strategic direction of the company and all aspects of the delivery of the business plan and continued growth aspirations. |

Rob Ackerman BSc, MRICS, MInstLM
Position: Head of Technical Services
Date of Birth: 12th June 1967
Qualifications:
• BSc (Quantity Surveying)
• Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors
• Member of the Institute of Leadership and Management
Experience:
Rob joined Markey Builders in 1996 following 11 years working with a Midlands based professional Quantity Surveying practice, carrying out both a traditional QS role as well as undertaking Employer’s Agent duties, operating within the social housing and leisure sectors.
Rob is responsible for procurement at Markey which includes, contract negotiation, tendering, design development, value engineering and agreement of final accounts. He heads the Contract Support Department, undertaking all surveying, buying and administrative functions within the organisation in addition to product development and sustainability. Rob is also a key member of the senior management team. |

Steven Goscomb
Position: Head of Construction
Date of Birth: 15th December 1966
Qualifications: NVQ level 5 in Construction Management
Experience:
Since joining the company in March 1987 as a carpenter, Steven has continued to see his career develop; moving from carpenter to assistant site manager, site manager, onto Contracts Manager and now to Construction Manager. Steven has a wealth of construction and management experience and is a valuable member of Markey’s senior management team, responsible for the delivery of the company’s construction programme. |
